A window into the past of Powell and Liberty Township

Movies in Powell

In the late 1940s, merchants arranged for free movies to be shown one night a week in various Delaware County towns. In Powell, movies were projected on the side of the hardware store that was located at 8 N. Liberty St. Most recently, Jeni's Ice Cream occupied the location. In July, they announced this site will not reopen.

The photo, circa 2007, shows Sharp and Canfield Hardware store which was a family business from 1921-1948. You can see advertising on the wall facing Powell Rd. The building continued as a hardware store and then became Powell Village Antiques (notice their sign in the window) prior to demolition for Jeni's.

Imagine yourself sitting in the parking lot of present-day Powell Liberty Antique Mall watching a movie 70 yrs. ago!
