Powell Liberty Historical Society

A window into the past of Powell and Liberty Township

Allison Goodrich (1851-1924)

A member of the Facebook group, Family Treasures Found, rescued an 1873 Ohio Wesleyan graduation photo of Allison Goodrich (1851-1924) from an antique shop in Portland, Oregon and mailed it to us. Allison’s parents, Aaron and Sarah (Hardin) Goodrich built the large white farmhouse still standing along Rt. 315 north of the Olentangy Environmental Control Center. The Goodrich cemetery on the property contains the remains of at least 12 family members, including Allison’s grandfather, Ebenezer, whose marriage to Betsy Dixon in 1813 marked the first marriage in Middlebury (Powell today). Allison’s maternal grandmother (Sarah Carpenter Hardin) was a descendant of Nathan Carpenter, Delaware County’s first settler in 1801. Allison was a dedicated teacher and was instrumental in the centralization of Liberty Township schools and the building of the twelve-grade Powell School, the “Monument on the Hill” in 1911. He served as President of the Liberty Township School Board for many years. The 1924 Delcoan Yearbook was dedicated to his memory.
