Powell sits on relatively high ground and did not suffer the devastation from the March 25, 1913 Flood compared to much of Delaware County. After raining every day for over a week, however, flood waters reached the second story of Mulzer’s Mill, sitting on the west bank of the Olentangy River, just south of Powell Road. A grist and sawmill existed on the site as early as 1815. When Herman Mulzer bought the property in 1877, he began using the mill to sell wood and wood chips used in beer making to the breweries in what is now known as German Village. Mulzer died in 1908 and the Schenck family bought the mill. But after the 1913 Flood, they decided the sawmill was a loss and tore it down. The grist mill remained standing and was razed a few years later. Mulzer’s Bridge, seen in a circa 1910 photograph, was also lost in the flood. It stood where the present Powell Road bridge is located.
